Only a couple of quick visits to Trudy-Ann over the last few weeks, mainly to check that there was no damage after the high winds.

Replaced the stern line as that seems to have been chafing on the mooring shackle. Otherwise everything is OK bar a bit of water coming in at the wheelhouse doors ( Slap on the wrist for me because I started remaking the door tops last October and still haven’t got them completed.) Got side tracked and am now in the process of making shutters for the lounge at home to replace the curtains but still plenty to do there. Otherwise the rest of the boat is bone dry and in good order but in need of a clean. With that in mind I ordered a new pressure washer from Karcher, but it arrived with a broken case. Reported it straight away and was given a return address and a collection arranged for a day later with no fuss. Courier failed to show so collection has now had to be arranged for next Tuesday – Easter Bah Humbug!

On the gardening front. All the plots have been rotovated and all the potatoes are in and earthed up despite the dogs trying to knock it all flat again.

Karen has erected all the necessary runner bean wigwams and pea runs but has only been able to plant out the broad beans as of yet but has lots of stuff ready to go out in the greenhouse and cold frame.

Still plenty going on down at the Grantham canal we seem to be running work parties at least once a week and last week-end boat trips for discover Lincolnshire on Saturday and Sunday. Skipped off a work Party today as I’m helping out on Sunday and Monday doing our usual Boat trips over the bank holiday 10am to 4pm but running from Woolsthorpe this time rather than the usual trips from Harlaxton Wharf. Should be plenty of tea and home made cakes on offer if last week was anything to go by.

Not so much happening on the boating front at the moment but on the restoration side things are getting very busy. The scrub and trees on both sides of lock 15 on the Grantham canal have had to be removed to allow access for plant to begin the restoration and it all had to be down before the start of spring and the nesting season. The volunteers set to with a will and it’s good to see how big the work parties are becoming these days. It would seem that the more people can see something happening the more there are who want to be part of it and it’s great to see. Just wish I could remember all their names.

On the home front the trees have all been given a haircut and the rotavating has just been completed though the ground is still a bit on the soft side. Plenty doing on at the moment with the Grantham canal, which is where I think I may be for quite some time over this spring. The new weed boat is hoped to be up and running shortly so it can be used before the nesting season starts and plenty more self set trees and bushes to remove between towpath and canal.

Looks like the lottery funding has come through and there is over £800,000 in the pot to restore the next two locks from Woolsthorpe (14 & 15) and do some preparatory work on the next two needing restoration. As I understand it one of the provisos is that volunteers are encouraged to train on various aspects of the construction, so if you want to learn how to drive a dumper , work a digger or lay bricks etc. come along and join us.

Most of the work at home has been to tidy up the garage/workshop so I can actually work in there. Its been OK up to now with the fine weather because I could work outside with the larger projects. Fortunately all the bigger machinery is on wheels so it can be shifted about.

Been doing quite a bit with the Grantham Canal Society lately. A work party down at Woolsthorpe clearing scrub from the off side of lock 17 and one at Harlaxton clearing self set trees and shrubs from between towpath and canal but cried off early because my new safety shoes were giving me grief. Think they will be for the bin unless I can find a way of spreading the steel toe cap.

Some of the lads have been re-pointing the top wing walls at lock 17 and have done a marvellous job in very dirty conditions. Making temporary dams so that the pointing can be done right down to the canal bed.

Aston lock to Willington. Set off for a short day about 09:30 following a CRT tug and work boat. Had to take it steady as we seem to be dragging bottom in places on this pound. Caught up by a charming couple at Weston lock where the CRT men kindly waved us through.. As we were taking our time they went ahead and we stopped to let the dogs off and managed to go hard aground doing so. Sods law prevailed with two boats either way as we were trying to reverse off. Shared the next two locks with a single handed tug who upset Karen by insisting on opening the gate paddles well before the water was up to the cill and these locks are over 10ft deep. Stopped for the night at Willington next to the Derby – Birmingham main line but this didn’t keep us awake. Found the local Co-op andmanaged to get some shopping in..

A nice slow start to the day. Karen went shopping in Alrewas and came back full of praise for the village, especially the butchers. While she was away the top got dropped and the towpath side of the boat got a quick sluice down. Up four locks and hard left at Fradley into the Coventry canal. Took it slow again to stop the back end dragging in some of the shallow bits. Touched a boat coming the other way at Bell Bridge after running hard aground on the inside of the bend even when a boat width off.

Noticed a fluctuation in the water gauge as we approached Streethay Wharf. Karen reports no taps dripping so we stopped for lunch just after the bridge beyond the moorings. Passing Streethay saw ‘Centurion’ the boat I did my RYA course on last year.

Started looking for a mooring after Whittington but it all either seemed too narrow or too open in the breeze so kept going until the wooded area just after Tamhorn Park Bridge. The off side warns for firing range, so must not upset the neighbours but it is so quiet and peaceful here in the trees. Just sitting here listening to the birds and the breeze in the trees and bit of classical music in the background. Karen is busy at the breakfast bar drawing leaves and hawthorn berries. The dogs have run themselves to a standstill and flaked out. No TV reception but what the heck. Chilling out or what?

Tuesday was spent vainly trying to catch up with some of the jobs around the house and garden.

Wednesday morning doing the regular trip to the butchers and into Melton for a restock on dog food and household stuff. In the afternoon disappeared into the workshop cutting timber for the wheelhouse door tops. Not been to Market Harborough just yet, working on the principal that when I run out of wood completely I’ll have a better idea of what I need. At the moment I’m recovering odd bits of usable timber from under the benches.

Work party with GCS on Thursday surveying the self sets. For my part walked from lock 16 to Casthorpe bridge (Br 64). Plenty of work to do here as we have the go ahead from CRT to remove all the self sets and scrub between the towpath and canal over autumn and winter. Most of the sets are young ash, sycamore or willow, not very big but just too big to pull out by hand.

Friday. Working on the new wheelhouse door tops and popped over to Screwfix for some new hinges and the like. Trying to get a outward sloping angle so that water will drain from between the top and bottom sections. This is proving to be a pain. If it was just a case of running it through the saw it would be no problem but the bottom section is raised at each end so it must be cut by hand. I’ll post a picture when the hinges are fitted and both parts can be seen together which should make more sense.

Out with the GCS again on Saturday, tidying up the depot and then joining the work parties out at Casthorpe bridge doing the preparatory work ready to start sapling removal in earnest as soon as we pass the official autumn threshold (Sept.1)

Clearing out the yard this morning (I seem to have been making a lot of sawdust just lately) and splitting a few logs ready for firewood. In the afternoon it was over to Newark for the CRT open day at their dry dock.

A few bits happening on the boat front at the moment. Apart from the varnishing side I’ve decided to rehash the wheelhouse doors. The big mistake I made with the first build was to measure the originals and use the same dimensions, but as you can see here the door is an inch shorter than the frame.

The plan now is to make the door bottom 1 inch taller but that means that the tops have to be an inch shorter. The reason for doing this is that the door top has to be narrower so as not to catch when it is folded down and the result is a hole each side of the door when the wheelhouse is up. Not much to worry about but it is annoying me and it does allow some water to get in especially of the wind is from the side.

What with this and making new shutters for the front windows at home there is a shortage of sapele so it looks like a trip to Market Harborough next week to get some more. Doing all this cutting the table saw blades seem to be running rather hot indicating they are losing their edge. Tried cleaning and a quick rub up with a hone but not a lot of difference. Rather than buy a new set I’ve ordered a machine specifically designed for sharpening circular saw blades. It’ll be interesting to see if it is any good when it arrives.

The past couple of days has been out with the Grantham Canal Society running trips for the public over the bank holiday weekend. This time we were running from Woolsthorpe to give the regulars a change of scenery from Harlaxton. Loads of bodies on Sunday and certainly more than I had expected today.

Had a response within 15 minutes and further e-mails through the week-end. The upshot being my complaint is being taken up with the store manager and a donation is being made to the Macmillan charity. Quite a positive result all in all.

Still pottering about with a couple of trips down to T-A to bring back bits of the wheelhouse woodwork for varnishing.

Yesterday with Karen having a bit of time off work we had intended to take the boat out so we could get alongside to touch up those annoying scratches but the weather forecast made that rather pointless.

Instead we opted for a meal at the Otter on the way to Kegworth which was first rate as usual and then on to Pillings Marina. Going through Loughborough I decided to pop into Maplin to stock up on some lithium batteries but ended up picking up a few extra pieces as well.

One of which was this weather station that was on offer.

Down at T-A just a quick visit to remove the cabin doors for varnishing and home.

First job was to set up the new weather station. Opened the box to find that most of the components were missing!!!!

A quick check to make sure I had the receipt and repack the box(or is that repack the packaging). Now it’s getting on for 4 o’clock on a Friday and so it’s a mad dash for the twenty or so miles back to Loughborough to try and get this sorted out.

Arriving a Maplin it was identified that I had the box for the display model. Rather than an apology I was asked why I hadn’t noticed it wasn’t as heavy as it should be. Jaw hits floor – perhaps I should have compared the weight of all the boxes in the stack. Anyway replacement was issued without question but the to my amazement the empty box was again added to the stack on display!!! I don’t suppose there is much storage space in the shops but this is ridiculous.

Another twenty miles home, hopefully not taking my frustration out on other drivers.

Today the weather station is up and working well, cabin doors have been rubbed down and had a coat of Impreg in preparation for varnishing while Karen has been sorting out the garden.

Just came in to order some circlips off the Beal website and to rub salt into the wound found that CR2032 batteries that I bought in Maplin for £3.99 each are available for 45p so I have ordered 5 at the further reduced rate of £2.20 and am interested to see how they perform.

After scratching the new paintwork I’ve been wondering about ways to keep Trudy-Ann from rubbing against the bank. Well last week I ordered a new wheelbarrow wheel to replace the one ravaged by hawthorn cuttings and as soon as I saw it I ordered two more.

Work party over and only a day late we’re back.

Yesterdays work party consisted of clearing the weed from the by-wash at lock 16 and doing a bit of strimming around the depot while others carried out some work on Centauri and other stuff up at lock 18. WRG and CRT reps arrived to set up for next week, which looks like it’s going to be a busy one. The plan being to prepare a hard standing site at lock 15 ready for the plant and machinery needed for the restoration. It sounds like it may be heralded as the new way forward with Grantham Canal Society, Waterways Recovery Group and Canal and River Trust all working together to improve our waterways. If this all comes to fruition don’t forget you heard it here first. J

Today just a quick trip to T-A to retrieve bedding and the like that may become stale if left on board and a few catch up jobs around the house.

Back to the trip.

Monday morning saw us away through the Beeston and Nottingham canals through to the Trent. I must say I was impressed with the state of the waterway having expected to find it like Leicester but it turned out to be a pleasant run without that run down feeling. A quick stop at Sainsbury’s on the way through for Karen while I dog sat.

Getting back out onto the Trent we passed Lock 1 on the Grantham canal.

A lot bigger that what we are used to but one reason for this trip is to see how we would cope with the larger locks if we want to go through to York in the future. After mooring we walked up to the lock and spoke to the lock keeper who was most helpful and explained the best practice for navigating these locks and pointed out this was the deepest and the following locks would only drop us about seven feet whereas this was 14. Through Stoke lock and moored at the pontoons at Gunthorpe bridge. Friend Ian Joined us and treated us to a meal at the Unicorn, a very pleasant way to spend an evening.

Having lost so much time to rain at the start of the trip we decided to turn back the following morning (Tuesday) rather than go through to Newark. This run was to be a new experience for us as well, owing to the fact that we had the headroom to run with the wheelhouse up.

Still got to be finished off but you get the idea. It actually takes up less space but gives the feeling of more elbow room. In this position there is more room behind the toilet so I was able to replace the copper single step plumbing reducer with a tapered reducer from Vetus which hopefully will reduce any back pressure. Either way it can’t do any harm.

The seat lockers in the wheelhouse have now got new ash faced tops. Once again made more jobs by deciding it was a good time to paint the inside of the lockers and line them with rubber sheet that I had left over from the step treads down from the wheelhouse to galley. While I was at it also made some rubber liners for the roof bars to protect the new paintwork from getting scratched J

Bank holiday Monday was a long day for all the people who turned out for the Grantham Canal Society trips from Harlaxton wharf. Even while Tony and Rosemary were setting up the stall people were turning up despite the weather in the morning. All trips were full bar the odd seat left over for the whole day.

A mixed bag for me with one run on ‘Three Shires’ and a bit of dog minding before taking ‘Centauri’ back to Woolsthorpe. Ian made use of the journey cleaning up and treating some of the paintwork.

The weather in the afternoon was kind and it was calm and pleasant as the boats were moored back at Woolsthorpe before being secured and prepared for their next outing.

No pictures since then as most of the time it has been dealing with items already covered. The gates are now in white primer, but still waiting to be hung. That will happen after a few more coats of paint.

All the turning tools and chisels have been sharpened and some of the turning tools have been re-profiled for different cuts. The band saw has had a thin blade fitted ready to cut blanks for turning.

Karen has managed, despite the weather to get the last of the crops in, just leaving me with another row of potatoes to plant but the ground is just too soft to use the plough on the rotovator.( At least that’s my excuse)

Spent a morning cutting willow and weaving it into the hawthorn hedge to the side of the garden as Sox has decided he likes to go exploring through the gaps.

Friday was down at T-A taking back cushions and such ready to for trips out but ended up bringing back the wheelhouse locker tops to be remade as they had been marked by water ingress in the past. The plan is to use the old ones as patterns and remake with ash edging and facing instead of plain birch ply. The new water filler cap has arrived at last so that will be one job for later in the week.

Cried off the GCS work parties last week to try and catch up on some of the jobs at home but was down at Woolsthorpe this morning with John cutting the grass in the depot. Luckily for us the weather was kind and the rain held off. This afternoon it has been in the shed making a new pedestal for the toilet on T-A in oak in the hopes that it will help the flow as at the moment the blackwater tank inlet is higher than the toiled outlet. Also started cutting the new locker tops.

Drove over to Crick with Ian from the GCS and the ladies to enjoy a very pleasant if damp day out. I’m certainly glad we are going on the first day as the ground is already starting to get churned up. Karen went looking for a windlass shoulder holster but didn’t manage to find one but did decide to buy one of those fancy ratchet windlass things. The seller gave us the web address where to get a holster and that has since been ordered on line.

Otherwise it was a case of a few of those little show bits that you always seem to pick up like a blade on a long handle to clear rubbish of the prop (funnily enough Karen still doesn’t want her bread knife back) and the new Nicholsons’s guide for Nottingham that shows the Grantham Canal. Also found time to say hello to fellow blogger Bruce from Sanity Again and Dave and Sharon from Bluewater. A thoroughly enjoyable day, just a shame the weather hadn’t been kinder.

Today (Sunday) crewed with Ian on the GCS workboat ‘Centauri’ taking it down to Harlaxton Wharf ready for the display and trips on ‘Three Shires’ tomorrow (Monday)

Well it’s been a bitting and bobbing week again. The driveway gates are well on the way to completion though I am not looking forward to painting them as that is one job I do not enjoy. Volunteers please apply.

It has been very much a week of working to what the weather is doing. When it is raining it’s into the workshop to sharpen every tool in the setup and bring them all up to scratch. Have invested in a 4000 grit stone for the Tormek to give a final edge to those tools that need it. The result is a mirror finish that is scarily scarp yet keeps its edge – amazing!

Fortunately we have had a lot of fine weather this week so took a day off gate building to pop down to Trudy-Ann on Monday with the TV which has now been remounted on its bracket. The new aerial has been connected up but I realised that there was no cable between wall socket and TV as we had never needed one before having had to rely on a DVD player which uses an HDMI cable. Ah well – fix it next time, and hopefully we will have a working set. Made a new mains hook-up with the remaining cable from the rewire but sod’s law prevailed and it was 6” too short, so the old one will have to stay. Took the opportunity to tank while I was down there ready for when we can get a week-end away.

Otherwise it has been a case of enjoy this remarkably fine weather – the Barbie has been on the go for the previous three eveningsJ

I really must get a grip of time management. As it stands the weather has been causing a few problems on the planned work front.

The original intention was to make some new driveway gates and allow the new paint on T-A to harden off before climbing all over her.

Over to Bassingfield for some timber twice because I can’t add up when I run out of fingers. Brought 45ft of T&G for the panels and then realised I needed 90ft and also needed some 6ft timbers to make clamps long enough to assemble the gates.

Well most of the parts have been made but I just need to assemble them to measure up for the diagonal braces.

The trouble being that the gates are each 5’ square and too big to assemble in the workshop.

So I have had to make do with a smaller project to make a work station for sharpening tools and the like. The guides on the Tormek system are brilliant and even allow for rotating turning gouges on the stone.

I’m quite pleased with this as it is all made from scrap and off cuts. The castors were given to me as the base of an engine delivery crate, with the only purchase being the drawer handles. I know – little things ……….

Otherwise there were a couple of afternoons over the bank holiday week-end down at Harlaxton Wharf with the Grantham Canal Society plus time spent on the usual hum drum items around the house.

Today being a decent day was down at Pillings fitting the new tabernacle and mast. It has been finished a while, just not the weather to fit it.

Last Wednesday it was a case of modifying the stand-off so that it would grip the post. Not much of a job so I continued the work making the new mast. Decided to go for a band in ash half way to the cross and bored through the centre to take the TV aerial cable.

The cable exits under the mounting arm to give a loop should it be necessary to rotate the aerial though I’m told that should not, and to prevent water ingress to the woodwork. The diversion achieved with a pocket hole jig to allow a steep upward angle.

Haven’t done any wood turning for about 15 years after we got burgled and most of my wood turning equipment disappeared with a pile of other stuff. I had forgotten how enjoyable it was to the extent I have ordered a new set of chisels and gouges, I intend to do a bit more of this.

Another busy few days has left me playing catch up again.

Last week was spent adding a few more bits such as the anchor, bow fender and a new TV aerial inlet.

Also had a problem with the inverter playing up. It turned out to be a loose crimp on the positive battery terminal. It has been on my to do list for a while as the battery leads to the inverter are the only wiring which has not been replaced. Fortunately I have all the new cable and crimp terminals ready, but it still is annoying to have faults from the original build jump up and bite me on the bum.

Been a busy week on the Grantham Canal front as well. Had a litter pick on the canal side at Gamston last Wednesday and managed to recover half a dozen bags of crap and a metal pram frame.

Otherwise it has been in the workshop turning down a new mast on the lathe. Unfortunately it is having to be made in two parts(Well four if you count the cross tree) and I’m trying to decide whether to try and hide the join or make a feature of it by inserting an ash band. Still got to bore out the centre to take the cable for the TV aerial. Pictures next time.

The windows have been refitted using stainless security bolts in place of the old ‘pop’ rivets and Garry has made a better job of lining up the front porthole. (Compare with header picture) He had his work cut out owing to some of the holes were only half into the steelwork and you can’t tap half a hole but he has managed to move things around to find good fixing points. Debbie, Andy, Garry and Wayne at Clean Sailing have certainly done us proud

I think it appropriate to point out at this point that now there seems to be agreement in the pipeline over the Pillings NAA CWDF seems to be throwing up other bits to try and unnerve people mooring there. One of which is that mooring under power lines may induce corrosion in a hull. See the picture above. T-A has been moored there for four years now and those are the original anodes, no sign of pitting in the hull.

The theory is that the strap will clamp round the post at the head of the mooring and the shaped rubber bush will bolt through the lifting eye, thus holding T-A away from the post and protecting our new paintwork. The bent stretcher bar is to allow the stand off to drop close to the post when not in use.
